Warsaw, Sep 20 (NationPress) In response to Russian attacks on Ukrainian targets near its border, Poland and allied aircraft were mobilized early Saturday to protect its airspace, according to the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command.
Fighter pairs on standby were promptly deployed, with air defense and radar systems placed on heightened alert, the command reported via social media X. They emphasized that Polish forces are prepared for immediate action.
By approximately 7 a.m. local time, operations had concluded, and the activated ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems returned to normal status.
The command highlighted that these actions were precautionary, aimed at securing Poland's airspace, and affirmed their commitment to continuously monitor the evolving situation in Ukraine, ensuring Poland's security at all times, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Earlier, on September 18, the US State Department greenlit a sale of Javelin missile systems valued at around 780 million US dollars to Poland, following a reported Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace, which raised alarms among NATO allies, according to the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).
The agency informed Congress of the proposed sale, which comprises 2,506 FGM-148F Javelin missiles and 253 lightweight command launch units.
This package also includes training, simulation rounds, spare parts, tool kits, battery coolant units, transportation, and technical assistance from both the US government and contractors, according to the statement.
The DSCA indicated that the sale aims to bolster Poland's capacity to meet NATO standards and defend its territory by modernizing older command launch systems and expanding its missile stockpile.
As per principal contractors, the Javelin weapons system is recognized globally as a leading shoulder-fired anti-armor solution. Its soft launch design enables safe deployment from within structures or bunkers.
Last week, the Polish military successfully intercepted drones that had “repeatedly violated” its airspace. In reaction, US President Donald Trump commented that the alleged Russian drone incursion “could have been a mistake.”
However, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk countered on social media, stating, “We would also wish that the drone attack on Poland was a mistake. But it wasn't. And we know it.”
Russia has denied the allegations made by Poland, the EU, and NATO regarding the drone launches. Several European leaders accused Russia of intentionally staging a drone incursion to test NATO's readiness.
