Kolkata, Jan 3 (NationPress) The police in West Bengal faced an attack in the Nazat Police Station area of North 24 Parganas while attempting to halt illegal construction on a contested plot of land, as reported on Saturday.
Several officers sustained injuries when locals targeted them with bricks and stones, and a police vehicle was also damaged.
Currently, eight individuals have been arrested in relation to this incident.
Furthermore, the head of the Boyarmari II Gram Panchayat and several others have been detained for questioning.
A significant police presence has been established in the area to maintain order.
This altercation occurred on Friday night in the Chuchura sector of Boyarmari II Gram Panchayat, falling under the jurisdiction of the Najat police station in Basirhat.
The police responded to complaints regarding illegal construction on the site.
According to sources from the Nazat police station, Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) was imposed on the land due to a court ruling.
It is alleged that supporters of the Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan, currently incarcerated, attempted to proceed with construction, disregarding the court order.
The situation escalated when police arrived to enforce the halt on construction, but the accused refused to comply.
An argument ensued, resulting in a sudden barrage of bricks and stones being thrown at the police.
A police vehicle suffered damage in the process. Subsequently, a large contingent of police arrived to regain control.
Authorities have stated that stringent measures will be enforced against those who engaged in illegal construction and attacked the police.
Investigations into the matter are currently ongoing.
A senior officer from Basirhat Police confirmed, 'Eight individuals have been arrested, and several others are under detention. A search for remaining suspects is ongoing.'
On January 5, 2024, an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team ventured into Agarhati in Sandeshkhali block I within the same district to probe a ration corruption case.
This investigation targets Sheikh Shahjahan, Executive Director of North 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad and a key figure in the Trinamool Congress.
Shahjahan's supporters had previously attacked the ED team, which was investigating his alleged involvement in land grabbing and the sexual harassment of women in Sandeshkhali.
In February, the area experienced significant protests as residents accused Shahjahan and his associates of land grabbing and sexual misconduct.
Shahjahan, who had gone into hiding for 55 days following the attack on the ED team, was arrested on February 29, 2024.
