Chennai, Jan 17 (NationPress) The distribution of Pongal gift hampers to ration card holders in Tamil Nadu has faced a temporary hold for some beneficiaries, as numerous families traveled to their ancestral homes for the harvest festival, officials reported on Saturday.
The state government has announced plans to restart distribution at ration shops when these beneficiaries return, with a formal update anticipated soon.
Officials from the Civil Supplies Department indicated that over 90 percent of eligible beneficiaries have already received their Pongal gift hampers as part of the state's main festive welfare initiative. The remaining beneficiaries are primarily those who were away from their residences during the distribution due to festival-related travel.
Each Pongal gift hamper comprises Rs 3,000 in cash assistance, one kilogram of brown rice, one kilogram of sugar, and a sugarcane.
Officials expect the remaining hampers, along with the cash aid, to be distributed by the end of this month.
The Pongal gift scheme was officially inaugurated on January 8 by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin in Alandur, a suburb of Chennai.
This initiative aims to provide financial support and essential food items to rice ration card holders during the festive season. The scheme is projected to assist approximately 2.22 crore ration card holders throughout the state, making it one of the largest festive welfare programs implemented by the Tamil Nadu government in recent years.
Following the launch, ration shops were directed to distribute tokens to about 300 beneficiaries per shop daily to facilitate smooth distribution and minimize overcrowding. To enhance coverage and cater to more recipients, the distribution period was extended up until Bhogi day on January 14. Despite this extension, a small fraction of beneficiaries could not collect their hampers because they were not at their registered locations.
Officials emphasized that no eligible beneficiary will be deprived of their Pongal gift hamper and that special provisions will be put in place to finalize distribution once individuals return from their native regions. Detailed guidelines are expected to be released shortly to ensure remaining beneficiaries receive their entitlements seamlessly.
