Chennai, Dec 31 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs 248.44 crore to procure vital food supplies that will be distributed as part of the Pongal gift hampers for the forthcoming harvest festival.

This initiative is set to benefit approximately 2.22 crore rice ration card holders throughout the state, underlining the government's dedication to offering festive support to families during this significant celebration.

An official order released by the Food and Consumer Protection Department on Wednesday confirms that the budget covers the procurement of raw rice, sugar, and full-sized sugarcane, which are essential components of the traditional Pongal gift hamper.

Of the overall budget, Rs 164 crore has been allocated for purchasing rice and sugar, while Rs 84.70 crore has been designated for sugarcane procurement.

According to the government order, raw rice will be bought at Rs 25 per kilogram, and sugar at Rs 48.54 per kilogram.

Each ration card holder will receive a full-sized sugarcane at a price of Rs 38, continuing the practice of uniform distribution across the state.

Officials have stated that procurement processes are being optimized to guarantee timely delivery before the Pongal festival, which is celebrated with immense enthusiasm throughout Tamil Nadu.

The Food and Cooperation Department has directed relevant agencies to finalize the procurement and logistical arrangements ahead of time to prevent any last-minute delays.

However, while the food items for the Pongal hamper have been confirmed, there is still uncertainty surrounding the cash component traditionally included with the gift.

In prior years, the state government provided cash incentives alongside essential items, which were well-received by beneficiaries.

Officials indicated that discussions are ongoing between the Chief Minister’s Office and the Finance Department to finalize the cash amount to be disbursed this year.

A formal announcement regarding the cash component is anticipated soon, once deliberations and financial approvals are finalized.

With over 2.22 crore families expected to benefit, the Pongal gift scheme remains one of the state's largest welfare initiatives, aimed at alleviating household expenses during the festive period and reaffirming the government’s commitment to social welfare.
