Bengaluru, April 21 (NationPress) Reverend Cyril Victor Joseph, Director of the Archdiocese Communication Centre, Archdiocese of Bengaluru, stated on Monday that Pope Francis was a prominent global leader who connected with the disadvantaged, exhibited profound concern for the environment, and raised important ethical questions regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI).
“It is truly a significant loss for the Church as he was a genuine shepherd and an exceptional leader in the universal Church. We express gratitude to God for his guidance, but it is indeed a considerable loss. The distinctive initiatives he launched during his leadership were characterized by mercy and compassion, ” remarked the Archdiocese of Bengaluru.
He further elaborated that Pope Francis envisioned a Church that reflects God’s aspirations - one that is more compassionate and merciful, reaching out to those in need, especially the marginalized.
“His influence transcended the Catholic community - he was a global figure. We observed his profound commitment to climate, ecology, and the environment. He was the pioneer of the encyclical on the environment titled Laudato Si’, which translates to ‘Praise Be to You’, emphasizing the care of our shared home,” he added.
Reverend Cyril also shared a personal story: “During my doctoral studies in Rome, I had the privilege to meet Pope Francis in the US. He was endearingly called a ‘tree hugger’ due to his vigorous environmental advocacy.”
He pointed out that despite the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Pope Francis voiced ethical apprehensions and urged for careful contemplation of its effects on humanity.
Reverend Cyril mentioned that Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrao, President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), had already issued a statement expressing deep condolences and calling for mourning in churches throughout India.
“We are praying for Pope Francis’s soul. We are awaiting the funeral date, and during this period, special prayers, masses, and services will be conducted in churches nationwide,” he stated.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar also conveyed his sorrow, expressing, “I am saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the first Jesuit and Latin American Pope, whose leadership was characterized by humility, compassion, and a deep commitment to the marginalized. He redefined spiritual leadership with remarkable courage, embracing the outcasts and walking the path of true service. My thoughts and prayers are with all those grieving his loss globally.”
