What Does Poshan Udaan 2026 Mean for Gujarat's Nutrition?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, Jan 13 (NationPress) As vibrant kites soar during Makar Sankranti, Gujarat is transforming this traditional festival into a significant platform with ‘Poshan Udaan 2026’, a comprehensive statewide effort focused on enhancing awareness about nutrition and health.
Running from January 12 to 13, this initiative is organized by the Department of Women and Child Development and capitalizes on the kite festival's popularity to underline the necessity of balanced diets, sanitation, and overall wellness for children, adolescent girls, and mothers.
Under the guidance of Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Manisha Vakil, events are taking place at various levels across the state including zonal, district, project, and Anganwadi levels as part of the ICDS program.
This initiative prioritizes dietary diversity, minimizing junk food intake, preventing anaemia among adolescents, ensuring sanitation, and improving access to clean drinking water.
Engagements involve communities, including schoolchildren, adolescent girls, expectant and nursing mothers, and local leaders.
Activities include kite-making competitions centered on nutrition, slogan contests, quizzes, sports events for adolescent girls, presentations on nutritious winter recipes, education on the benefits of drumstick as a superfood, and showcasing millet-based dishes under the Shree Anna initiative.
Health-related services such as haemoglobin screenings, distribution of IFA tablets, BMI assessments, and personalized nutrition counseling are also provided for mothers and children.
At Anganwadi centers, beneficiaries received colorful kites and manjha strings, along with traditional nutritious treats like chikki made from coarse grains, peanuts, sesame, and mamra.
On Makar Sankranti, these kites, adorned with nutrition and health messages, will deliver a symbolic call for public awareness throughout Gujarat’s skies.
The state government has urged citizens to refrain from using unsafe Chinese manjha and to follow safety measures while flying kites.
With Poshan Udaan 2026, Gujarat aims to celebrate not just with joy and color, but also with a dedication to fostering a healthier and more informed society.
