New Delhi, July 7 (NationPress) The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma announced on Monday that the halted work on the concluding section of the underpass for the Pragati Maidan Integrated Transit Corridor is anticipated to recommence following the Centre's approval of a revised proposal.

Once the green light is received, the PWD plans to kick off the work immediately after the monsoon season, aiming for a completion timeline of eight months, according to the Minister.

The revitalization plan for the project indicates that Underpass-5, which links Bhairon Marg to Ring Road, will be constructed solely for light motor vehicles and will function as a two-lane corridor instead of the initially envisioned three lanes.

Work was suspended in 2023 when the precast concrete boxes, which were pushed underneath an active railway line using the box-pushing method, sank due to flooding.

The engineering hurdles, along with the complexities of working beneath live railway lines, necessitated expert intervention, the Minister stated.

“We engaged with leading institutions such as IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and CBRI (Central Building Research Institute) to devise a practical and secure solution. Following their guidance, we have proposed shifting to a cast-in-situ construction method, which avoids disturbing the railway tracks and lessens ground risks,” Verma elaborated.

A comprehensive proposal, inclusive of expert suggestions and modified engineering designs, has been submitted to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) last month.

“We are optimistic that the Centre will provide the necessary approval soon. All preparatory work has been completed on our part — the design is secure, the method is robust, and the urgency is apparent given the daily traffic turmoil in the vicinity,” Verma noted.

Currently, traffic management is being facilitated through temporary diversions and barricades due to the unfinished underpass, causing significant congestion near Ring Road, Bhairon Marg, and Sarai Kale Khan.

Upon completion, this segment will ensure a dedicated, uninterrupted traffic flow in both directions, according to him.

“Our aim is straightforward — to provide world-class infrastructure while prioritizing safety and long-lasting durability. We are ready to proceed as soon as we receive the approval,” Verma concluded.
