Mumbai, May 6 (NationPress) Prasoon Joshi, a renowned lyricist and screenwriter who holds the position of Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification in India, has addressed the ongoing language debate in light of the recent Sonu Nigam incident.
During a discussion with IANS at a musical event, he emphasized that language serves as a unifying element, suggesting that the diverse languages of India should be celebrated much like its cultural richness.
He remarked, “I have never perceived language as a source of division. Instead, I believe languages bring us together. I consider myself fortunate to have been born in a nation rich with linguistic variety. While my first language was Kumaoni, it was not Hindi. As I grew older, I learned Hindi and eventually entered the corporate world, where I adopted English. Additionally, I have gained significant insights from Bengali poetry.”
Joshi credited the acclaimed Oscar and Grammy-winning composer A. R. Rahman for opening his eyes to the beauty of Tamil poetry, stating that it has profoundly inspired his artistic journey.
He further expressed, “Working alongside A. R. Rahman has allowed me to explore Tamil poetry. I view it as a privilege that we have access to such a variety of languages. We should refrain from engaging in pointless language disputes. For me, our linguistic diversity is a source of strength as a nation.”
When asked about the controversy involving Sonu Nigam and the FIR filed against him, Joshi candidly admitted he was unaware of the situation and prefers to distance himself from matters that do not honor India's diversity.
“I am not familiar with the origins of the Sonu Nigam and Kannadiga issue. I have not been following it. I consciously choose to distance myself from anything that does not celebrate the diversity of my country. I believe our diversity is our greatest asset. We should focus on promoting positivity. If someone has made a mistake, discussing it is unnecessary,” he concluded.
