New Delhi, Dec 3 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday awarded the National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for the year 2025 in celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
In her address, the President emphasized that individuals with disabilities, referred to as Divyangjan, must be treated with equality.
She stated that it is the duty of all involved parties to ensure their equal involvement in societal and national development, framing it not as an act of charity but as a necessity.
A society can only be deemed developed when Divyangjan are actively engaged across all sectors, she noted.
The President also drew attention to this year’s theme: “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress”, calling it a timely and progressive message.
She expressed her contentment with the nation’s shift towards a rights-based and dignity-focused approach for persons with disabilities, moving away from a welfare-centric mindset.
Furthermore, she mentioned that the inclusion of Divyangjan is integral to India's developmental journey.
The term 'Divyangjan', introduced in 2015, symbolizes the nation's respect for individuals with disabilities, she added.
President Murmu also mentioned that the government is enhancing the ecosystem for inclusion and empowerment.
“Various national institutions are now dedicated to areas like sign language research, mental health rehabilitation, and sports training. Millions of Divyangjan have received Unique Disability ID cards, facilitating easier access to government services and programs,” she highlighted.
She urged that society, alongside the government, must remain vigilant and dedicated to upholding the rights and dignity of Divyangjan.
“Together, we can expedite progress. Every individual must commit to ensuring dignity, independence, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities and include them in the nation’s growth,” she asserted.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities, marked every December 3, is a United Nations initiative aimed at advocating for the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities. This day also serves to increase awareness and galvanize support for a more inclusive, accessible, and barrier-free society.
