New Delhi, Dec 3 (NationPress) On this year's International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PwD), Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the government's dedication to uphold the dignity and provide opportunities for individuals known as 'Divyang'.
Observed annually on December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992. This day aims to foster understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the rights, dignity, and well-being of individuals with disabilities. Key objectives include enhancing awareness regarding their inclusion in all sectors and ensuring their full participation in society.
In a post on X, PM Modi expressed, "On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we reaffirm our commitment to consistently ensure dignity, access, and opportunity for our Divyang sisters and brothers."
He highlighted, "They have made remarkable contributions across various sectors due to their creativity and determination. Additionally, their participation has significantly enriched our national progress. Over the years, India has implemented crucial measures for Divyang Kalyan through legislation, accessible infrastructure, inclusive education policies, and innovations in assistive technologies. We are committed to doing even more in the future," he added.
The aim of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is to advocate for the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities and to raise awareness regarding their complete integration into society.
The UN General Assembly proclaimed this day in resolution 47/3 in 1992 to encourage a society where individuals with disabilities can partake equally in political, social, economic, and cultural life.
On this significant occasion, President Droupadi Murmu also awarded the National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for 2025 in New Delhi.
During her address, the President stated, "Divyangjan deserve equality. Guaranteeing their equal involvement in the societal and developmental journey is a responsibility for all stakeholders and not merely an act of charity. A truly developed society must include the equal participation of Divyangjan."
She emphasized that the theme of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities - 2025, 'Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress', aligns with this "progressive vision".
