Disability as a Unique Strength: Insights from Sikkim's Chief Minister

Gangtok, Dec 3 (NationPress) Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang proclaimed on Tuesday that disability should be regarded not as an obstacle but as a distinct characteristic that can evolve into a significant asset with appropriate opportunities.
During the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, CM Tamang remarked, "Disability must never be perceived as a limitation, but rather as a unique attribute that enhances human diversity and enriches society. Given the right opportunities, support, and collective efforts, these attributes can turn into powerful assets that foster innovation and propel progress."
"It is our ethical responsibility to guarantee that every individual, irrespective of their abilities, has equal access to education, employment, healthcare, and public services," he emphasized.
The Chief Minister expressed, "On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we unite to honor the resilience, strength, and remarkable contributions of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in forging a more inclusive and compassionate world."
CM Tamang reaffirmed the state government's commitment to establishing a community where both physical and societal barriers are eliminated. Through forward-thinking policies, improved accessibility, and empowerment initiatives, we are dedicated to ensuring that PWDs can live lives of dignity, independence, and purpose.
He stated, "I call upon all our valued citizens to adopt an inclusive mindset, where the talents of every individual are acknowledged and celebrated. To the organizations, caregivers, Social Welfare Department, and advocates tirelessly striving to enhance the lives of PWDs: your contributions are the foundation of this transformative journey."
CM Tamang continued, "Let us commit to creating a society that appreciates every person's potential, one that transcends stereotypes and limitations, and one that stands as a symbol of equality and empowerment."
Since 1992, the United Nations has endorsed the global observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3. This day is recognized worldwide with varying levels of success.
The aim of this celebration is to enhance awareness of disability challenges and garner support for the rights, dignity, and overall well-being of individuals with disabilities.
Moreover, it seeks to highlight the advantages of integrating persons with disabilities into all aspects of political, social, economic, and cultural life. The term "International Day of Disabled Persons" was utilized until 2007.
