Jaipur, Dec 3 (NationPress) Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma addressed the Special Persons with Disabilities Awards ceremony in Jaipur on Tuesday, highlighting that individuals with disabilities have excelled in various fields such as sports, education, science, technology, arts, and music.
He underscored that ensuring equal opportunity and dignity is not merely a policy goal but a profound moral obligation.
“Our commitment is to transform Rajasthan into the most accessible and considerate state for the disabled,” stated the Chief Minister.
The ceremony, held at the Harish Chandra Mathur Institute of Public Administration (OTS) on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, recognized individuals and organizations excelling in the field of disability empowerment.
The Chief Minister congratulated the awardees, noting that their stories of courage and success serve as an inspiration to society as a whole. He mentioned that the United Nations has designated December 3 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities to promote inclusivity and protect rights.
He remarked that the achievements of para-athletes at both national and international events, including the Paralympics, showcase the talent and determination of persons with disabilities and motivate others.
Discussing national initiatives, the Chief Minister noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Accessible India Campaign has greatly enhanced accessibility reforms.
He highlighted the expanded definition of disability, which now includes 21 categories under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, such as acid attack survivors, significantly reshaping public perceptions and enhancing rights-based support.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed that persons with disabilities represent a vital asset to society and shared ongoing welfare initiatives, including distributing wheelchairs, smartphones, motorized tricycles, and scooters. Last year, 2,000 scooters were distributed, with this year’s figure increased to 2,500.
Additionally, he announced the introduction of electric-powered wheelchairs for beneficiaries with rare conditions like muscular dystrophy. The mess allowance for residents in institutions for persons with disabilities has also been raised from Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,250.
Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Avinash Gehlot stated that Rajasthan is among the leaders in disability certification and the rollout of the Unique Disability ID Card.
During the event, the Chief Minister distributed smartphones, hearing aids, smart canes, and mobility support devices to beneficiaries and visited an exhibition showcasing products created by persons with disabilities.
The event was attended by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel, Additional Chief Secretary (Social Justice and Empowerment) Aparna Arora, Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Iqbal Khan, senior officials, and numerous participants.
