Gangtok, March 12 (NationPress) In a strong reaffirmation of the government's dedication to combating the issue of drug abuse, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) asserted on Thursday that the state adheres to a zero-tolerance stance against drugs. The administration is enacting robust and organized strategies to tackle drug trafficking and substance misuse.

During a media briefing, the Chief Minister stated that the battle against drugs is a paramount concern for the Sikkim government, as substance abuse presents significant social, health, and economic repercussions, especially for the youth.

Tamang highlighted the multifaceted measures taken by the state government, which include stringent law enforcement, community engagement, awareness initiatives, and rehabilitation assistance to effectively confront the crisis.

He pointed out that law enforcement agencies have escalated surveillance and enforcement efforts against drug trafficking networks. Through collaborative investigations and enhanced prosecution, the state has achieved a high conviction rate in drug-related crimes, delivering a powerful message against the illicit drug trade.

According to the Chief Minister, this notable conviction rate results from refined investigative processes, improved cooperation between law enforcement and judiciary, and strict adherence to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

These actions, he emphasized, have considerably bolstered deterrence against drug-related offenses within the state.

Tamang also mentioned that Block Development Officers (BDOs) have been granted magisterial powers, enabling them to act swiftly and bolster enforcement efforts at the community level.

This development has further improved the administration's capacity to ensure that offenders face justice and are prosecuted under the law.

The Chief Minister underscored that combating drug abuse necessitates collective action from the government, civil society, families, and educational institutions.

He noted that the government collaborates closely with local communities, youth groups, and NGOs to amplify preventive measures and guarantee timely intervention for those at risk of substance misuse.

Addressing the broader regional context, Tamang urged all Northeastern states to unite in addressing the challenges of drug trafficking and substance abuse.

He asserted that synchronized efforts and enhanced collaboration among neighboring states are crucial to effectively eradicate this menace from the region.

Stressing that protecting the youth from drugs is vital for society's future, the Chief Minister called for a concerted effort from all segments of society to create a drug-free and healthier Sikkim.
