Kochi, Oct 8 (NationPress) Congress general secretary and Member of Parliament from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday condemned the Central government for its unwillingness to waive loans for those impacted by the catastrophic Wayanad landslides of 2024.
In a post on social media, she stated: “The Central government’s refusal to forgive the loans of victims from the catastrophic Wayanad landslides of 2024 is appalling. This is especially disheartening considering that loans for certain major corporations are cleared without any hesitation. These loans symbolize the lives of individuals who have suffered unimaginable hardship through no fault of their own… The Kerala High Court has remarked that when the people needed assistance the most, the Union Government has let them down. I completely concur.”
Her comments come in light of the strong remarks made by the Kerala High Court, which expressed dissatisfaction on Wednesday regarding the Union government’s approach to disaster relief.
The landslides on July 30, 2024, wreaked havoc in four villages, resulting in over 200 fatalities, hundreds of injuries, and 32 individuals still unaccounted for.
During the session, a Division Bench criticized the Centre for its “bureaucratic babble” and its lack of willingness to act, stating: “Kindly inform the Union Government that it has failed the people of Kerala… If you are reluctant, have the courage to admit it. Who are you attempting to deceive?”
The Bench underlined the importance of transparency, pointing out that while some state-run banks had forgiven loans, many Union-controlled banks had not.
The Court requested a list of banks and financial institutions governed by the Union and indicated it would involve them, issuing notices while temporarily halting recovery actions.
“We will provide them the chance to seek a modification of this interim order after submitting a counter-affidavit, where they will declare whether or not they will waive the entire loan,” the Bench noted.
The combined focus of political leaders and the judiciary underscores increasing public scrutiny of government disaster management strategies, particularly concerning timely financial support for affected communities. Priyanka Gandhi’s post echoes widespread discontent with perceived inconsistencies in loan waivers and the urgent need for governmental action.
