Wayanad, July 30 (NationPress) On Wednesday, the atmosphere in and around Meppadi taluk in the scenic district of Wayanad was filled with sorrow, as it marked one year since devastating landslides obliterated four villages, resulting in 298 fatalities and leaving over 40 individuals missing.
A poignant all-religion prayer gathering took place at the Meppadi village council, attended by numerous religious leaders and local residents.
Remembrances were held at the shared grave site in the area where many victims of the calamity are laid to rest.
The Kerala Police honored the departed souls with a guard of honor on this solemn anniversary of the disaster.
A staggering 145 homes were completely destroyed; 170 houses suffered partial damage, while 240 residences have been deemed uninhabitable, and 183 homes were lost to the landslides.
Wayanad Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi expressed her condolences on social media, sharing a heartfelt message with her constituents.
“Today marks a painful anniversary—the Chooralmala-Mundakkai landslide, a tragedy that continues to resonate in our hearts. Although I am away on parliamentary duties, my thoughts remain with you. As we honor the memories of those we lost, may they bring peace, and may your faith lead you forward. I stand with you today and always,” wrote Priyanka Gandhi.
Notably, when this disaster struck, her brother and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had stepped down as Wayanad MP to retain his seat in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh.
Both Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi visited the affected areas soon after the tragedy, promising support to the families impacted.
Now, one year later, approximately 402 families are awaiting new homes that the Kerala government is constructing in two townships, while around 50 families are anxiously waiting to see if they will be included in the second list of beneficiaries.
According to current plans, the two townships are projected to be completed by December.
The Left government received High Court approval for the acquisition of two estates—Harrison Malayalam Estate spanning 65.41 acres in Nedumbala, Meppadi grama panchayat, and Elston Estate covering 78.73 acres in Kalpetta.
State Revenue Minister K. Rajan, who visited Wayanad on Wednesday, stated that construction is progressing robustly in four zones.
“We aim to deliver the homes by December 31st, allowing beneficiaries to move into their new residences in the New Year. Everyone on the list will receive their houses,” Rajan affirmed.
However, Wayanad Congress MLA, T Siddique, criticized the pace of work, stating it was progressing sluggishly.
“The Left government has failed to act promptly and is behaving stingily. It is unfortunate that they are engaging in politics, especially with elections approaching,” Siddique remarked.
The upcoming Assembly elections in Kerala are set to take place in April/May to elect a new 140-member Kerala Legislature.
