Wayanad (Kerala), March 27 (NationPress) - Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi, and Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan laid the foundation stone for the Wayanad Model Township in Kalpetta on Thursday, aimed at aiding victims of the catastrophic landslide that occurred in July 2024. They expressed disappointment over the Centre's lack of financial support for the rehabilitation of the unfortunate individuals who lost everything.

The initiative plans to construct 430 new homes along with various essential facilities for those impacted by the tragic event on July 30 last year. During the ceremony, Vijayan also initiated the construction of the first model house.

Vijayan stated, “We anticipated central assistance, but nothing has been received yet. When can we expect it? Based on previous experiences, we are uncertain. What we received was a loan, and it was minimal. In the absence of central support, we moved ahead and garnered help from multiple sources,” adding that this situation arises during a period when the state is facing one of its most severe financial crises.

He continued, “We requested a package of Rs 2,221 crore and had high hopes from the Centre, but none materialized. We also sought for this to be declared a national disaster, but that too did not happen.” The only assistance received was a loan of Rs 529 crore, he revealed.

“This disaster has not only affected Kerala but has resonated worldwide. Eight months have passed since the incident, and we have now commenced the rebuilding process. A total of 430 homes, each spanning 1,000 square feet, will be constructed. Additionally, all necessary community living facilities will be included,” Vijayan stated.

He added, “This demonstrates the resilience of our state. The people have displayed unity, transforming the impossible into reality. The reason behind this achievement is solely the solidarity of our people and their compassion towards the state government.”

Priyanka Gandhi remarked, “Whenever we reflect on the experiences of the local residents in the landslide areas, it’s immense and cannot be quantified.”

She stated, “On one side lies the devastation, while on the other, the remarkable unity to confront the tragedy. Today is a solemn occasion for us to honor all those who are no longer with us.”

Gandhi emphasized, “This township represents the first step in uniting everyone, and the Chief Minister has committed to completing the work promptly. Funding is essential. We all wished for this to be declared a natural disaster for funds to be allocated. Despite our efforts, there has been no central support even after PM Narendra Modi's visit... it has yet to be announced. However, we are united in our efforts to assist you, and we will stand by you until your lives are restored.”

State Revenue Minister K. Rajan described the day as historic for those who confronted the tragedy with resolve.

“All 298 individuals who stood with us are no longer here, and we cannot bring them back. Nonetheless, we are joining forces to rebuild the lives of those who lost everything. This township will provide everything necessary for those affected. On the 63rd day after the tragedy, the Kerala government took over two estates, and had it not been for legal hurdles, half of the homes would have been completed by now,” he explained.

Satheesan stated that the opposition has never obstructed the state government's efforts in formulating rehabilitation plans.

“We highlighted the deficiencies in the assembly because our only concern was for those affected to remain united. We urged the state government to ensure those who lost everything could live together. There have been delays in finalizing the beneficiary list. We must ensure that there are no further delays,” he asserted.

He remarked, “PM Modi visited and raised expectations for support, but nothing has materialized. This is unacceptable and warrants protest.”
