Wayanad, July 2 (NationPress) Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and former MP for Wayanad, along with his sister, Priyanka Gandhi, who is the current MP and AICC General Secretary, is set to visit Wayanad later this month to officially lay the foundation stone for 100 houses promised to those affected by last year’s catastrophic landslide.
The construction of these homes is part of a rehabilitation commitment made by Rahul Gandhi in August 2024, following one of the most severe natural disasters in the history of Wayanad.
The landslide, which occurred in July 2024, devastated four villages, resulted in over 280 fatalities, and left approximately 80 individuals unaccounted for. Nearly 6,000 people were rescued, and more than 8,000 individuals were displaced and relocated to relief camps.
The Gandhi siblings visited Wayanad on August 1 last year to evaluate the devastation, engage with survivors, and tour relief facilities. During a meeting with local officials and Congress leaders—where the magnitude of the disaster and the significant housing loss were analyzed—Rahul Gandhi pledged that the Congress party would construct 100 homes for the affected.
Since then, the Kerala government has identified appropriate land for the initiative, and the ceremony to lay the foundation stone will signify the official commencement of the construction.
Rahul emotionally compared the grief of the survivors to the pain he experienced when his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was assassinated in 1991: “I know what I felt when my father died. But this is much worse—people here have lost entire families. It’s not just one person feeling this pain; it’s thousands,” he remarked.
After vacating his position as Wayanad MP to maintain the family stronghold in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, Rahul was succeeded by Priyanka, who achieved a remarkable victory in the by-election with a margin exceeding four lakh votes.
