Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 19 (NationPress) Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is set to perform the groundbreaking ceremony on February 26 for 50 houses that are being built by the Congress party for those affected by the Wayanad natural disaster.

The event is scheduled for 2 pm at Kunnambetta in Meppadi panchayat, as announced by KPCC president Sunny Joseph MLA on Thursday.

This housing project is a crucial part of the Congress party's rehabilitation efforts following the catastrophic landslides that impacted Mundakkai and Chooralmala in July 2024.

The disaster wreaked havoc across four villages in Wayanad, resulting in numerous casualties and significant destruction.

Over 200 lives were lost, hundreds were injured, and 32 individuals remain unaccounted for.

Additionally, more than 1,500 houses and structures were either destroyed or severely compromised, forcing entire communities to evacuate.

Approximately 600 hectares (around 1,483 acres) of land, including extensive agricultural plots and plantations, were devastated, severely impacting local farming activities.

Initial assessments by the government indicated that property damages could reach around Rs 1,200 crore, highlighting the scale of this disaster.

For this housing initiative, a total of 5.42 acres has been allocated, with 3.24 acres already registered and an additional 2.18 acres expected to be registered this week.

Each beneficiary will receive eight cents of land, with houses designed to have a built-up area of 1,100 square feet.

Soil analysis and water-flow assessments have been completed, and environmental safeguards have been established to assure safe and long-lasting construction.

In the subsequent phase, another five acres will be acquired in the Ezhanchira area of Meppadi panchayat to build an additional 50 houses.

Beneficiaries include families residing in temporary shelters, as well as those overlooked in the government's assistance list due to technical issues.

During the ceremony, financial aid of Rs 5 lakh each will be distributed to 40 shop owners who missed out on government support, following the intervention by local MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra after her discussions with them.

Prominent leaders from Congress and UDF, alongside notable figures, are anticipated to attend the event, marking a pivotal moment in the region's recovery as it works to restore its devastated communities.

Point of View

Providing essential support to families in dire need. It reflects the party's commitment to humanitarian efforts and community rehabilitation in the wake of natural calamities. The focus on infrastructure and aid is critical for the resurgence of Wayanad.
