Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Wayanad (Kerala), Feb 19 (NationPress) The inaugural phase of the Wayanad Model Township, designed to rehabilitate those affected by the Mundakkai–Chooralmala disaster, has reached completion with 178 houses ready for distribution.
The ceremony will be officiated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who will present title deeds to the beneficiaries during an event scheduled at Elstone Estate in Kalpetta on February 25.
This project, envisioned as a holistic rehabilitation initiative, is being developed through the collaborative efforts of various government departments, agencies, and dedicated workers.
The Mundakkai–Chooralmala tragedy occurred on July 30, 2024, when severe landslides and flash floods, caused by intense monsoon rains, devastated Wayanad.
The disaster impacted four villages, resulted in injuries to hundreds, claimed over 200 lives, and left 32 individuals unaccounted for.
Entire communities were obliterated, homes were lost, families were displaced overnight, and many found themselves without shelter, which necessitated one of Kerala’s largest coordinated rehabilitation endeavors.
The state government has planned a total of 410 houses along with necessary infrastructure.
In this initial phase, 178 homes have been completed and will be allocated to families who suffered total losses in the disaster.
Each single-storey house, designed to suit Wayanad’s terrain and climate, covers 1,000 sq ft and features a sturdy foundation capable of supporting a second floor in the future.
These homes include a master bedroom, two additional rooms, a sit-out, living room, study, dining area, kitchen, and storage space.
Once fully completed, the township is anticipated to accommodate over 1,662 residents.
Beyond mere housing, the project aims to establish a comprehensive residential ecosystem.
Planned amenities include internal roads, a health centre, an anganwadi, a public market, and community centres.
The health centre will be equipped with a laboratory, pharmacy, consultation rooms, vaccination and observation areas, outpatient facilities, and a ticket counter.
The public market will consist of shops, stalls, an open market area, children's play areas, and parking facilities.
The community centre will encompass a multipurpose hall, library, sports club, playground, and open-air theatre.
The government has acquired 64.4705 hectares of land at Elstone Estate in Kalpetta village to ensure a safe and suitable settlement for survivors.
The foundation stone was laid by the Chief Minister on March 27, 2025, and the remaining construction is progressing swiftly.
