Wayanad Rehabilitation Township Inauguration Moved to March 1
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 23 (NationPress) The inauguration of the initial phase comprising 178 homes at the Wayanad Model Township, designed to rehabilitate those affected by the Mundakkai–Chooralmala disaster, has been postponed from the previously planned date of February 25 to March 1.
The Chief Minister's office, led by Pinarayi Vijayan, announced the schedule change to the relevant departments on Monday, although no specific reason was provided for the delay.
It was revealed last week that Pinarayi Vijayan was set to inaugurate the township and hand over title deeds to beneficiaries at an event at Elstone Estate in Kalpetta on the original date of February 25.
This schedule alteration has reportedly impacted the visit of Wayanad Lok Sabha MP Priyanka Gandhi, who had adjusted her travel itinerary to be present at the inauguration.
Simultaneously, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and former Wayanad MP, is expected to arrive in Kerala on February 25 to engage in discussions with senior Congress leaders regarding preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.
The township is being established as a holistic rehabilitation project, with collaborative efforts from various government departments, implementing agencies, and construction workers.
The Mundakkai–Chooralmala disaster, which occurred on July 30, 2024, involved catastrophic landslides and flash floods caused by severe monsoon rains, impacting several regions of Wayanad district.
This calamity ravaged four villages, resulted in over 200 fatalities, injured many, and left 32 individuals unaccounted for, marking it as one of the most devastating natural disasters in Kerala's recent history.
The disaster obliterated entire communities, destroying homes and displacing families overnight, leading to one of the state's largest coordinated rehabilitation initiatives.
The state government has outlined a plan for a total of 410 houses as part of the township project, including necessary infrastructure to support the rehabilitation of the affected families.
In the initial phase, 178 houses have been finalized and will be allocated to families who completely lost their homes due to the disaster.
Each single-storey house is designed to fit Wayanad's unique terrain and climate, covering approximately 1,000 sq ft, with a structurally reinforced foundation that allows for the possibility of adding an additional floor in the future.
Every housing unit includes a master bedroom, two extra rooms, a sit-out area, a living room, a study, a dining area, a kitchen, and dedicated storage, ensuring dignified and functional living conditions for the beneficiaries.
Upon completion, the township aims to accommodate over 1,662 individuals impacted by the disaster.
In addition to housing, the project envisions creating a comprehensive residential environment with vital civic and social infrastructure.
Facilities planned for the township include internal roads, a health center, an anganwadi, a public market, and community centers to facilitate long-term rehabilitation and community rebuilding efforts.
The foundation stone for this project was laid by Pinarayi Vijayan on March 27, 2025.
Construction is progressing swiftly, with authorities striving to complete the project within the designated timeframe.
