Wayanad, Feb 26 (NationPress) In a pivotal initiative for families affected by landslides in Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, along with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the MP of Wayanad, laid the foundation stone for the construction of 100 homes for survivors of the Chooralmala–Mundakkai disaster on Thursday.
During the event, Priyanka shared memories from her first visit to the area shortly after the calamity struck on July 30, 2024.
"The devastation I witnessed that day remains etched in my memory," she remarked, highlighting the overnight loss of homes, livelihoods, schools, and businesses suffered by families.
What resonated most with her was the remarkable unity and resilience shown by the community, transcending religious boundaries.
Although she was not serving as the MP at that time, Priyanka expressed her deep connection to the community, stating, "I have come to consider myself part of your family since then." She vividly recounted meeting determined farmers who had to resort to daily wage work and small traders whose shops were destroyed.
She emphasized that the Congress party has consistently raised this issue across various platforms, including Parliament, and has even appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for a national disaster declaration, while also reaching out to the Prime Minister.
"Regardless of political differences, we all came together during this crisis," she remarked.
The housing project will feature homes spanning 1,100 sq ft on plots of eight cents each.
Currently, 3.25 acres have been acquired and transactions executed, with plans to purchase an additional 2.18 acres soon, following successful negotiations for a total of five acres.
Additionally, she announced financial support of Rs five lakh for 40 shopkeepers affected by the disaster to help them revitalize their businesses.
Rahul Gandhi remarked that the tragedy showcased the strength and humanity of the people of Wayanad.
"You have lost much, yet your courage and compassion remain intact," he stated, describing the ceremony as a tribute to those who perished.
In a light-hearted moment, he shared a humorous sibling dispute from their journey, eliciting laughter from the audience.
"Recently, I made a silly comment to my sister, and since then, she has remained upset with me. I told our mother about it, and until we landed here, she was sulking. But the moment we arrived, everything changed. That’s the essence of Wayanad for us," he said, reaffirming their bond with the district beyond politics.
