Transforming Lives in Wayanad: Inauguration of a Revolutionary Resettlement Township
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Wayanad, Feb 28 (NationPress) A calamity that disrupted lives and altered landscapes in Wayanad has paved the way for one of Kerala’s most significant rehabilitation initiatives, spanning 49 hectares.
On Sunday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will officially open the newly constructed resettlement township located near Kalpetta. This project is envisioned not just as a housing development, but as a fully integrated social ecosystem aimed at supporting families displaced by the disaster that obliterated four villages on July 30, 2024.
This tragic event resulted in over 200 fatalities, with 32 individuals still unaccounted for, alongside extensive property damage.
Situated on strategically acquired land under the Disaster Management Act, the township symbolizes an investment of ₹299 crore.
The land was procured for ₹44.33 crore following legal processes.
The construction has been carried out under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model by the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society, ensuring technical oversight and quality assurance at every phase.
The first phase includes 410 homes, which have been developed at an impressive pace.
A model house was constructed in merely 105 days, and the initial batch of 178 homes is ready for distribution.
Each unit, measuring 1,000 sq ft, is designed to endure floods and earthquakes and consists of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living and dining area, a study room, a kitchen, a work area, and a sit-out.
The residences are fully equipped with concealed three-phase electrical wiring, energy-efficient BLDC fans, LED lighting, and provisions for future air conditioning and inverter systems.
However, the township encompasses much more than just housing. It includes 11.42 km of internal roads, bridges, underground power lines, drainage systems, decentralized sewage treatment facilities, a one lakh litre water storage system, CCTV surveillance, and a solid waste management system.
Future public amenities such as a community center, health facility, Anganwadi, market, open-air theatre, recreational areas, and a football ground will be established as the residential community stabilizes.
A key aspect of this project is its renewable energy framework.
Each residence is outfitted with a 2 kW rooftop solar system under net metering, collectively forming one of the largest residential solar installations in Wayanad.
Additional solar capacity will support community infrastructure, thereby decreasing reliance on the grid.
Engineered to comply with green building standards, the township incorporates rainwater harvesting, sustainable materials, and extensive greenery.
As it gears up for its inauguration, the project stands as a testament that thoughtful rehabilitation can not only provide shelter but also restore dignity, resilience, and a sense of community.
