Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 29 (NationPress) As the Assembly elections approach, the Pinarayi Vijayan Cabinet has introduced a significant relief initiative for those affected by the Mundakkai–Chooralmala disaster in Wayanad. The Cabinet has agreed to assume and settle the outstanding loans of individuals officially recognized as disaster victims.
The total loans being cleared exceed Rs 18.75 crore, encompassing 1,620 loans from 555 beneficiaries.
Revenue Minister K. Rajan emphasized that the government would take full responsibility for these liabilities, with the necessary funds sourced from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF).
He clarified that this action is not simply a write-off but a complete takeover of the debt burden by the State.
Additionally, the government will reimburse Rs 93 lakh to Kerala Bank, which had already written off loans for affected borrowers.
All loans belonging to those officially declared disaster-affected will be settled in their entirety, the Minister confirmed.
This Cabinet decision follows the devastating disaster on July 30, 2024, which impacted four villages in Wayanad, resulting in hundreds of injuries, over 200 fatalities, and leaving 32 individuals unaccounted for.
The tragedy incited widespread calls for comprehensive relief measures, including loan waivers for survivors who lost homes, jobs, and loved ones.
Minister Rajan criticized the Central Government’s approach, describing it as “inhumane” towards the victims.
He stated that the Centre's refusal to waive loans felt like a political vendetta, but he remains hopeful that procedural challenges can be resolved, allowing the relief process to be finalized before the elections.
This issue had also garnered strong comments from the Kerala High Court, which took up the matter suo motu, expressing disappointment with the Centre for declining to provide loan waiver relief to those affected.
The court highlighted the extraordinary nature of the disaster and underscored the necessity for a compassionate response.
The government's initiative is viewed as a significant political and administrative measure at a time when disaster rehabilitation is a pressing public concern in the hill district.
By absorbing the debt burden, the State aims to offer immediate financial relief and assist survivors in rebuilding their lives following one of Kerala's most devastating natural calamities in recent years.
