Chandigarh, Dec 8 (NationPress) Punjab's Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema took a sharp jab at the leadership of the Congress and BJP, pressing them to address the grave corruption accusations made by Navjot Kaur Sidhu and Sunil Jakhar.
During a media briefing, Cheema asserted: "I challenge the high command of the Congress and the high command of the BJP: Why are you silent? Are you silent because you are complicit in this corruption? I urge both parties to respond within 24 hours.”
He raised concerns over the silence from both parties about leaders who have shifted their loyalties yet whose past actions reveal a history of entrenched corruption.
Cheema recalled that the current Punjab BJP President, previously the Punjab Congress President, was in office during the tenures of two Chief Ministers -- Amarinder Singh (who allegedly secured his position for Rs 500 crore, according to Sidhu) and Charanjit Singh Channi (who supposedly gained his role after a Rs 350 crore deal, as stated by Jakhar).
He questioned why Jakhar, while part of the Congress, chose to remain silent about the sale of ministerial posts and assembly seats, only voicing concerns post his shift to the BJP.
Additionally, Cheema highlighted the case involving a relative of Channi from whom nearly Rs 10 crore was recovered, a situation currently under legal scrutiny.
The Finance Minister emphasized that the integrity and behavior of leaders from both parties that governed Punjab from 1997 to 2022 are now being exposed by their own members.
He mentioned the recent claims made by Navjot Kaur Sidhu regarding the alleged sale of the Chief Minister’s position in the Congress government for Rs 500 crore.
Cheema estimated that the Congress Chief Ministers may have misappropriated around Rs 2,000 crore, contributing to the estimated Rs 30,000 crore looted from the people of Punjab.
He asserted that the establishment of sand, liquor, and transport mafias, alongside the Scholarship Scam that exploited the Scheduled Castes, as well as significant scandals in drug de-addiction centers, all stemmed from a systemic structure of exploitation cultivated within the Congress party, which has continuously victimized the state's farmers, laborers, traders, Dalit community, and government employees.
