Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema Denounces Khaira's Insulting Remarks on Women
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, March 10 (NationPress) Punjab's Finance Minister Harpal Cheema strongly criticized the derogatory comments made by Congress member Sukhpal Singh Khaira regarding women.
During a session in the Vidhan Sabha and in subsequent media interactions, Cheema urged the Congress leadership to expel Khaira for his unacceptable remarks that disparage the women of Punjab.
This outcry was prompted by Khaira's alleged statement questioning how women celebrating the announcement of Rs 1,000 from the Mawan Dhian Satkar scheme could give birth to courageous individuals.
In his response, Cheema expressed, "It's profoundly shameful that a repeatedly elected official from a region where Guru Nanak Dev preached the value of women can openly insult the mothers and daughters of our state."
He characterized such remarks as shocking and unacceptable in Punjab, a region that has always honored the dignity of women.
Cheema remarked that a seasoned politician making such disparaging comments reflects a regressive mindset and undermines the values upheld by society.
He further mentioned that the Congress party has lost control over its rhetoric and political acumen.
"The situation within the Congress has deteriorated to the point where even prominent figures like Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi have cautioned the state leadership regarding their behavior," he noted.
Emphasizing the positive impact of the government's initiatives for women, Cheema highlighted the Budget discussions and the Mawan Dhian Satkar scheme.
"This scheme serves as a lifeline for women who previously relied on their fathers, brothers, or husbands for basic needs," he stated.
He concluded by noting that his Cabinet colleague Baljit Kaur had articulated during the Budget discussions that the financial support of Rs 1,000 for general category women and Rs 1,500 for those from Scheduled Castes will promote their financial independence and self-respect.
