Punjab's Law and Order Crisis: BJP and Congress Blame AAP for Rising Terrorism
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi/Punjab, April 3 (NationPress) The Congress party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised alarms on Friday regarding the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab, claiming that the state is once again grappling with "narco-militancy". Moreover, the BJP accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government of contributing to the "rise in terrorism" across the region.
These statements follow a recent low-intensity blast reported near the BJP office located in Sector-37, Chandigarh.
Congress MP Manish Tewari expressed, "The situation in Punjab is becoming increasingly sensitive. The grip of narco-militancy is tightening once more, and its repercussions are now evident in Chandigarh as well. There have been four alarming incidents within the last fortnight, including one involving a grenade-like device thrown at the BJP office."
Tewari further emphasized the need for collaboration among the Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh Police to maintain order, particularly in regions like Mohali, Panchkula, and New Chandigarh. "The public is understandably anxious about the current state of affairs," he remarked to IANS.
Yogender Chandolia, a BJP MP, placed the blame for the surge in terrorism squarely on the AAP government, stating, "The recent explosion in Chandigarh represents a serious threat. Both the Punjab and Central governments must respond decisively to this incident."
Rajeev Ranjan Prasad from Janata Dal-United also attributed the rise in substance abuse and the prevalence of criminal gangs in Punjab to the ruling AAP. He commented, "It is undeniable that drug trafficking, substance abuse, and gang influence have escalated. The general populace in Punjab feels fearful and threatened. This clearly demonstrates that law and order is declining under AAP's governance."
Dharmendra Singh, a spokesperson for the Samajwadi Party, called for stringent measures in response to the Chandigarh explosion.
He stated, "Relevant agencies must conduct thorough investigations and implement strong actions against such incidents," as reported to IANS.
In contrast, AAP MP Malwinder Singh Kang questioned the security of Chandigarh, a high-security zone under the Ministry of Home Affairs. "If an area like Chandigarh cannot be secured, how can the BJP-led Central government claim to govern Punjab effectively?"
Kang urged the Union government to transfer control of Chandigarh to the AAP-led Punjab government, stating, "It is, after all, the capital of Punjab. If the Centre wishes to demonstrate confidence, they should allow our government full authority over Chandigarh. We will ensure that no untoward incidents occur."
