Bengaluru, April 2 (NationPress) The top two seeds, Jay Clarke and Oliver Crawford, faced unexpected challenges, while India’s Raghav Jaisinghani achieved a remarkable upset against the fourth seed Alexandr Binda to advance to the second round of the SM Krishna Memorial Open held at the SM Krishna Tennis Stadium on Wednesday.
There was much to cheer for the Indian team as Jaisinghani secured an impressive victory over Italy’s Binda. After losing the first set, the Indian player staged a stunning comeback, winning five consecutive games, including two breaks, to take the second set 6-3. In the final set, Jaisinghani broke serve in the first and fifth games, finishing with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Having fought through two rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw, Jaisinghani shared that adhering to his strategy against Binda was crucial to his success.
“I started strong, but he played better in the first set. I had a clear strategy that I followed, and it started yielding points for me. I focused on my tactics and gradually, things turned in my favor,” Jaisinghani explained. He also mentioned having “no expectations” going into the match and emphasized taking it “one day at a time.”
“I’m not someone who sets specific goals or ranking targets. I take it match by match. It would be fantastic to progress as far as I can in the tournament, but I’m not pressuring myself,” he added.
In a near-upset, India’s Kabir Hans, who also came through the qualifying rounds, put up an incredible fight against top seed Jay Clarke. Clarke took the first set 6-4, but Kabir retaliated in the second, winning it 6-4. The third set was closely contested and ended in a tiebreak, where Clarke ultimately prevailed.
Clarke’s fellow countryman, Oliver Crawford, the second seed, also progressed to the second round by defeating Australia’s Kody Pearson in three sets.
