Will Rahul Gandhi Lead the Kerala Assembly Poll Campaign?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 16 (NationPress) Member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and Chairman of the Campaign Committee, Ramesh Chennithala, announced on Monday that Rahul Gandhi will take on a pivotal and influential role in the United Democratic Front's (UDF) campaign for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections.
Election Commission officials from Delhi are arriving in the state capital and will be present for two days next week.
Speaking to the press at the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, Chennithala, following the inaugural committee meeting, mentioned that comprehensive plans are in progress for Rahul Gandhi's campaign activities throughout the state.
He noted that the yatra led by Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan has attracted record crowds, transforming into a significant political mobilization that reflects the public sentiment against the current state government.
Rahul Gandhi has been formally invited to participate in the concluding ceremony of the yatra in Thiruvananthapuram on March 7, with the party anticipating his attendance.
Chennithala emphasized the UDF's electoral achievements, stating that despite being out of power for ten years, the front has managed to secure consecutive victories by unifying its cadre across Kerala.
The UDF has won all Assembly by-elections except for Chelakkara, claimed 18 out of 20 Lok Sabha seats in recent Parliamentary elections, and demonstrated a strong performance in the latest panchayat elections.
He criticized Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for failing to recognize these victories according to democratic norms.
In addition, Chennithala accused the LDF government of utilizing public funds for misleading propaganda to fabricate an image of confidence.
He reiterated previous claims that funds from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board, which were raised via high-interest loans intended for infrastructure projects, are being misappropriated for advertisement campaigns and politically motivated publicity.
Demanding accountability, he cautioned that a future UDF administration would investigate any misuse of public funds and ensure that accountability is established.
As the Kerala Assembly elections draw closer, the Congress appears poised to deploy a high-profile campaign spearheaded by Rahul Gandhi, coupled with sustained critiques of the state government's financial and governance record, framing the election as a contest between the people's mandate and what they describe as state-sponsored propaganda.
