The arrested individuals include Ramesh Kumar Chauve, the Chief Electrical Distribution Engineer at Central Railway, along with two private individuals, Anshul Varma and Kanay Varma, who were detained following coordinated searches at five locations on Monday.
The CBI initiated this case against Chauve, a member of the Indian Railway Services of Electrical Engineers, 2003 Batch, due to suspected misconduct in awarding a tender worth Rs 40.54 crore to a private firm.
According to the CBI, the Chief Electrical Distribution Engineer colluded with representatives from the private company to secure the tender, demanding a bribe of Rs 40 lakh, equating to 1% of the tender amount. The agency successfully executed a sting operation, capturing Chauve as he accepted an initial bribe of Rs 10 lakh from one of the private individuals.
During the raids, which targeted the homes and offices of the accused, the CBI confiscated Rs 90.79 lakh in cash, along with gold jewellery weighing 241.30 grams and silver jewellery weighing 2577 grams, totaling Rs 42.52 lakh. Additional incriminating documents and Rs 3.85 lakh in cash were also recovered from Chauve’s office, bringing the overall seizure to Rs 1.47 crore.
The CBI's statement highlighted that other significant documents were also uncovered during the investigation.
