Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar on Sunday, 14 June 2026, conducted an extensive inspection of the Tarakeswar-Seoraphuli section of Eastern Railway (ER) in West Bengal, reviewing infrastructure gaps and issuing directives to improve passenger amenities across the corridor. Kumar was accompanied by senior officials from the Railway Board, Eastern Railway, and South Eastern Railway (SER). The inspection spanned the full Tarakeswar-Seoraphuli stretch, during which Kumar conducted a window-trailing run from Tarakeswar to Howrah, closely examining track alignment, overhead equipment (OHE), signalling installations, and the overall upkeep of railway premises.

At Howrah station, Kumar assessed the station building, circulating areas, and passenger flow points. He issued several directives, including covering platform areas with transparent roofing sheets to maximise natural light, creating dedicated entry and exit points for smoother passenger movement, and improving connectivity between the station and the Metro network through streamlined access routes.

Bankura Extension: Progress and Legal Hurdles

Work is already under way to extend the Tarakeswar-Seoraphuli section up to Bankura. Once complete, the project will provide a shorter rail route from Howrah to the southern districts of Bankura and Purulia. According to officials, work on a small stretch has been held up due to legal issues, though the broader extension remains on track.

This connectivity push is part of a wider effort to accelerate socio-economic development in West Bengal by reducing travel time to districts that have historically lacked direct rail access from the state capital.

Coordination with State Government

Kumar also chaired a coordination meeting at Tarakeswar with the District Magistrate of Hooghly and senior officials of the Public Works Department (PWD), Government of West Bengal. The meeting focused on strengthening coordination between the Railways and the state administration for the timely execution of ongoing and upcoming projects in the region.

'The Chairman reviewed passenger management arrangements and operational aspects of the section to ensure smooth train operations and enhanced passenger convenience. He also held detailed discussions with railway officials on measures to improve service quality and operational efficiency,' an Eastern Railway official said.

Directives Issued for Howrah Station

Among the specific instructions issued at Howrah, Kumar directed a comprehensive renovation and aesthetic enhancement of the historic station building, optimisation of parcel loading and unloading areas, and installation of prominent platform indication signage at entry points to facilitate easier navigation. He also emphasised optimising holding areas for better crowd management.

Notably, Howrah is one of India's busiest railway hubs, handling hundreds of trains and lakhs of passengers daily, making these improvements particularly significant for commuter experience across the region.
