NFR GM inspects Bihar electrification, New Jalpaiguri station upgrade in Bengal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava on Sunday conducted a wide-ranging inspection tour covering electrification works in the Araria-Galgalia section of Bihar and the ongoing redevelopment of New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station in West Bengal, signalling a push to modernise key rail corridors in eastern and northeastern India.
Electrification Progress in Bihar
Shrivastava undertook a comprehensive review of electrification works along the Araria-Galgalia section, which is aimed at enabling seamless electric train operations and promoting energy-efficient railway infrastructure. Following the inspection, he also conducted a Window Trailing Inspection to assess track conditions, signalling systems, bridges, level crossing gates, and passenger amenities along the route. The inspection was carried out alongside senior officials from NFR headquarters in Maligaon, near Guwahati, and the Katihar Division in Bihar.
New Jalpaiguri Station Redevelopment
At New Jalpaiguri, the General Manager conducted a detailed review of ongoing station redevelopment under the World Class Station project. According to NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, NJP is being transformed into an international terminus equipped with modern facilities, state-of-the-art platforms, enhanced passenger amenities, and improved circulating areas. Shrivastava also reviewed initiatives under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which targets creating a modern, efficient, and future-ready travel hub.
New Facility and Green Initiative
During the visit, Shrivastava inaugurated a newly developed Boot Laundry facility at Rautara under the Katihar Division, designed to improve maintenance and cleaning of railway staff equipment and operational gear. He also participated in a plantation drive, planting saplings to reaffirm NFR's commitment to environmental sustainability and green initiatives across railway premises.
Quality and Timely Completion Emphasised
The General Manager stressed timely completion of all ongoing projects while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and operational excellence, according to CPRO Sharma. Shrivastava acknowledged the efforts of railway officials and staff in driving continuous modernisation and infrastructure development across the zone. This comes amid a broader national push to upgrade railway infrastructure, with NFR overseeing operations across the Northeastern states, seven districts of West Bengal, and five districts of north Bihar.
With electrification and station upgrades advancing simultaneously, NFR's dual-front push is expected to improve both freight efficiency and passenger experience across one of India's most strategically important rail zones.
