Jaipur, Sep 3 (NationPress) The Rajasthan Assembly was adjourned until 2 p.m. on Wednesday following chaotic scenes during the Question Hour, where BJP MLAs entered the well while Congress MLAs protested alleged irregularities in the state's smart meter installation initiative. Chanting slogans against the government, opposition members executed a walkout from the House.

The issue was highlighted by Congress MLA Rohit Bohra, who questioned the tender awarding process for the scheme.

In response, Minister of State for Energy Hiralal Nagar stated that the decision to implement smart meters was made by the prior Congress administration. He emphasized that the tendering was conducted in compliance with regulations and that contracts could not be awarded to any blacklisted companies.

Minister Nagar further indicated that the Union government had delegated the authority to states to decide on the implementation of smart meters. He pointed out that the Congress government had approved the project in 2023 via a cabinet circular, without a formal cabinet meeting.

The assembly also experienced heated discussions regarding a query from Congress MLA Dungar Ram Gedar about the “toxic” water flowing from Punjab into Rajasthan’s canals.

When Gedar expressed dissatisfaction with unanswered parts of his question, Speaker Vasudev Devnani stated it was his prerogative, assuring that the matter would be taken up later. As Gedar pressed further, the Government Chief Whip intervened, asserting that the Speaker's ruling was not subject to challenge.

Earlier, Congress MLAs honored the memory of children who tragically lost their lives in a school building collapse in Jhalawar with floral tributes at the Assembly premises.

Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully remarked, “Tributes were not paid inside the Vidhan Sabha, but we are paying our respects here.”

The opposition has indicated its intent to persistently challenge the government on matters of governance, accountability, and transparency throughout the Monsoon Session, which commenced on Monday.
