New Delhi, May 4 (NationPress) The agenda for Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's discussions with his Japanese counterpart Gen Nakatani tomorrow will prominently focus on enhancing bilateral defence collaboration, as stated by an official.

As defence and security form crucial components of the relationship between the two nations, both parties are anticipated to share insights regarding the prevailing regional and global security dynamics, aiming to strengthen cooperation, the official added.

India and Japan enjoy a long-standing friendship, which has gained significant momentum since the establishment of the Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014.

In recent years, defence interactions between India and Japan have intensified, reflecting a growing alignment on strategic issues, particularly concerning the peace, security, and stability of the Indo-Pacific Region.

This meeting marks the second encounter between the Defence Ministers within a span of six months, following their initial meeting in November 2024 during the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus in Lao PDR, as per a statement.

During his three-day visit to Vientiane, Lao PDR, Rajnath Singh also met with Gen Nakatani and Gilberto Teodoro, Secretary of National Defence of the Philippines, on the final day.

The two nations reaffirmed the significance of collaboration in the defence industry and technology. Reflecting on the recent milestone of signing the Memorandum of Implementation of the UNICORN mast in Japan a week ago, both sides agreed to bolster cooperation in the co-production and co-development of defence manufacturing.

To enhance interoperability between Indian and Japanese forces, the Ministers discussed the Reciprocal Provision of Supply and Services Agreement and military participation in various bilateral and multilateral exercises. They also expressed interest in exploring new cooperation avenues within the air domain.

Previously, a Memorandum of Implementation was signed at the Indian Embassy in Tokyo on November 15, 2024, for the co-development of the Unified Complex Radio Antenna (UNICORN) mast for installation on Indian Navy vessels.

The MOI was exchanged between Sibi George, the Indian Ambassador to Japan, and Ishikawa Takeshi, Commissioner of the Acquisition Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA) under the Japanese Ministry of Defence in a ceremony held in Tokyo.

The UNICORN mast, equipped with integrated communication systems, aims to enhance the stealth capabilities of naval platforms.

The Indian Navy is actively pursuing the integration of these advanced systems, which will be co-developed by Bharat Electronics Limited in India in collaboration with Japan.

Upon realization, this would mark a pioneering instance of co-development of defence equipment between India and Japan.
