Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Indore, Nov 10 (NationPress) Congress Councillor Anwar Qadri, currently incarcerated due to a case associated with alleged 'love jihad', was officially dismissed from his position on Monday and has been deemed ineligible to run for municipal elections for the next five years.
The decision to remove Qadri was made following a proposal from BJP Councillors within the Indore Municipal Corporation and was executed by Indore's Divisional Commissioner Sudam Khade.
"Anwar Qadri has been dismissed from his role as Councillor in accordance with the Madhya Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 1956. He has also been deemed ineligible to participate in municipal elections for the next five years," a BJP Councillor confirmed to IANS.
Notably, on June 20, Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav had sent a letter to the Divisional Commissioner's Office, highlighting the criminal cases against Qadri and requesting his removal as Councillor of Ward No. 58 under the legal framework.
Qadri has faced numerous serious allegations, including engaging in the alleged 'love jihad' activities, and was taken into custody by the Indore police in August. Since then, he has remained in jail.
The charges against him involve rape, forced religious conversion, and illegal trafficking.
He allegedly financed individuals from the minority community to target, sexually assault, and convert women from other communities.
Qadri was charged following the arrests of two individuals, Sahil Sheikh and Altaf Shah, in unrelated cases.
This prominent Congress Councillor has been implicated in criminal conspiracy and violations of the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 2021.
In July, the Indore district administration also invoked the National Security Act and issued arrest orders against him under this law.
According to police records, Qadri has a history of 18 cases filed against him in various police stations in Indore and Ujjain, including charges of assault, attempted murder, and violations of the Arms Act.
