Christchurch, June 6 (NationPress) New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has officially named Rob Walter as the new head coach of the BlackCaps, overseeing all formats for the next three years, starting mid-June and culminating with the ICC T20 World Cup in New Zealand and Australia in October-November 2028.

Walter's contract signifies that he will guide the BlackCaps through a rigorous international schedule, which includes the ICC World Test Championship, the 2028 LA Olympics, and three significant ICC events: the ICC 2026 T20 World Cup, the ICC 2027 Cricket World Cup, and the ICC 2028 T20 World Cup.

Taking over from the highly successful Gary Stead, Walter expressed his honor and enthusiasm for continuing the excellent work of his predecessor and contributing to such a high-performing group of players and staff.

"The BlackCaps have maintained a reputation as a successful and respected team on the global stage, and I am truly privileged to have the opportunity to build on that," Walter stated in comments reported by NZC.

“This is a fantastic chance to collaborate with an exceptionally talented group of players and support staff during a time filled with numerous global events and significant bilateral series. I am eager to commence this journey; it’s exhilarating, challenging, and presents enormous opportunities for everyone involved," he added.

Originally from South Africa, Walter most recently served as the head coach for the South African men's white ball teams, guiding them to the semi-finals of the 2023 Cricket World Cup, the semi-finals of the 2025 Champions Trophy, and the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Additionally, he coached the men’s New Zealand A squad in India in 2022 and has previously held positions as the assistant coach for both the Pune Warriors and Delhi Daredevils, along with being the Head Coach for the Eastern Titans in South Africa.

Walter also served as Head Coach for both the Otago Volts and the Central Stags. While with the Otago Volts, he guided the team to the Super Smash play-offs in 2019-20 and secured consecutive Ford Trophy finals appearances in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

His accomplishments with the Central Stags were even more remarkable: the team reached the Ford Trophy final in 2021-22, followed by championship victories in both the Ford Trophy and the Plunket Shield in 2022-23.

According to NZC chief executive Scott Weenink, the timing and circumstances are perfect for Walter. "Rob is an elite coach with an exceptional track record. His domestic success in New Zealand, paired with his recent global achievements with South Africa, positions him as the ideal leader for the BlackCaps. We are thrilled to welcome Rob back home to steer our team through this exciting and demanding phase, which includes three major ICC events," Weenink remarked.
