Major Liquor Seizure: Customs in Gujarat's Valsad Intercept Rs 50 Lakh Smuggling Operation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Valsad, April 17 (NationPress) - In a significant operation, customs officials in Gujarat's Valsad district confiscated a substantial shipment of Indian-made liquor, estimated at nearly Rs 50 lakh, after intercepting a suspicious vessel off the Kolak coast, as reported by officials on Friday.
As per an official announcement, the Valsad Customs Division, operating under Ahmedabad Customs, was performing routine maritime patrols when they spotted a dubious boat heading towards the coastline.
The vessel was halted near the Kolak sea area in Valsad district.
Upon inspection, authorities found 555 boxes containing 18,672 bottles of Indian-made liquor, believed to be smuggled from Daman into Gujarat, contravening the state's prohibition regulations.
Since there is no customs duty on Indian-made liquor, the confiscated goods did not constitute a customs infraction but fell under the jurisdiction of state prohibition enforcement.
"The boat, the liquor consignment, and eight alleged bootleggers have been turned over to the Police Inspector at Pardi police station, along with the necessary documentation and inventory of the seized goods," officials noted.
All the liquor boxes have been transferred to the Gujarat Police for subsequent legal proceedings.
Ongoing investigations are currently underway.
This seizure is part of a broader effort against illicit liquor trafficking in Gujarat, a state that has upheld prohibition for decades. In recent months, numerous substantial confiscations have been reported throughout the region.
Earlier this week, the Surendranagar Local Crime Branch confiscated 11,220 bottles of liquor valued at Rs 76.56 lakh from a truck near Sedla village, bringing the total value of the seized assets, including the vehicle, to approximately Rs 1 crore.
In another incident earlier this year, police in Dahod district intercepted two trucks carrying a total of 30,000 bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor, worth Rs 1.92 crore, during routine highway checks, which resulted in the arrests of the drivers.
Additionally, in Valsad district, police seized liquor valued at Rs 19.73 lakh hidden in a transport vehicle, with the total worth of the case exceeding Rs 33 lakh.
Authorities have asserted that smugglers commonly exploit coastal routes, highways, and concealed transportation methods to smuggle liquor into the state, necessitating coordinated enforcement efforts from customs, police, and other agencies.
