Chennai, Oct 25 (NationPress) The School Education Department has revealed that the concluding phase of admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act is set to begin throughout Tamil Nadu on October 30. This initiative represents a significant advancement towards ensuring equal access to education for every child.
According to School Education Department Secretary B. Chandra Mohan, a total of 7,717 schools have signed up for the RTE quota this year, with 81,927 applications submitted for LKG and 89 applications for Class 1 for the academic year 2025–26.
The enrollment process adheres to the 25 percent reservation stipulated by the RTE Act, ensuring free and compulsory education for children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
As per the timeline, eligible children will be admitted on October 30 in schools where the number of applications does not exceed the available spots.
In instances where applications exceed the number of seats, a draw of lots will take place on October 31, after which the chosen students will be enrolled.
Upon completion of the process, all admitted children will be officially recorded under the RTE quota in the Education Management Information System (EMIS) portal, ensuring full transparency and monitoring throughout the academic year.
Chandra Mohan reiterated that institutions are explicitly forbidden from charging tuition or admission fees from students admitted under the RTE category.
“Any fees that have already been collected must be refunded within seven working days,” he stressed.
To facilitate smooth execution, district-level monitoring committees have been tasked with overseeing the process, and a State helpline has been established to assist parents and address concerns.
“The state government is unwavering in its commitment to uphold every child's constitutional right to free and compulsory education,” Chandra Mohan asserted.
“The RTE 25 percent admission initiative will continue to be implemented in a transparent, equitable, and child-centered manner across Tamil Nadu.”
Officials noted that this year's RTE admissions have garnered a positive response from parents statewide, indicating a rising awareness of the scheme's advantages and the government’s ongoing efforts to make quality education available to all.
