Tamil Nadu RTE Admissions Begin Today; Process to End by May 29
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 2 (NationPress) – The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has unveiled the timeline for the admissions process under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for the forthcoming academic year, which is set to kick off on Thursday.
This proactive initiation signals a return to a well-organized schedule, following the disruptions faced last year. During this initial stage, preparatory activities will commence on April 2.
On April 6, the department will communicate with private schools regarding the number of seats that need to be allocated under the RTE quota. These numbers will be derived from the enrolment statistics available in the Education Management Information System (EMIS).
To promote transparency, all qualifying private schools have been directed to display the count of seats available under the 25% RTE quota on their premises starting April 7.
Moreover, a comprehensive list of available seats across schools will be made accessible online on April 15, allowing parents to explore options and make well-informed choices.
The admissions application window will open on April 20 and remain open until May 18.
Parents are required to submit applications through the official online portal during this timeframe. The entire admissions process is anticipated to wrap up by May 29.
According to the RTE Act, 25% of seats in entry-level classes, specifically Lower Kindergarten (LKG) and Class I, must be reserved in unaided, non-minority private schools for children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
This provision benefits nearly 85,000 students each year, providing them with access to quality education.
Eligibility criteria have been explicitly outlined. Children residing within a one-kilometre radius of the school will be prioritized.
For LKG admissions, children must be born between August 1, 2021, and July 31, 2022. For Class I, the eligible birth date range is from August 1, 2019, to July 31, 2020.
If the number of applications exceeds the available seats, a lottery system will be held on May 22 to ensure a fair and transparent selection process.
Last year, RTE admissions experienced delays until October due to financial constraints under the Samagra Shiksha scheme.
With the process now back on course, officials are optimistic about smoother implementation and increased participation this year.
