Srinagar, Oct 30 (NationPress) Chaos disrupted the Jammu and Kashmir's (J&K) legislative Assembly on Thursday as members of the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaped into the Well of the House, chanting slogans against the National Conference (NC) government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
As soon as the Assembly convened for the day, BJP MLAs entered the Well of the House vocally opposing the NC government. The BJP had previously submitted an adjournment motion on Wednesday, calling for discussions on the plight of flood victims in J&K.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected the adjournment motion, leading to a disruption in the Assembly's proceedings on Thursday morning as BJP members continued to demand a discussion on the flood victims.
With order failing to be restored, the Speaker instructed marshals to escort the BJP members out of the Well of the House.
When they refused to comply, two BJP MLAs were physically removed from the Assembly.
This autumn session of the J&K Assembly began on October 23 and is due to conclude on October 31, which is a Friday.
The J&K Legislative Assembly comprises 90 members: 41 from the NC, 28 from the BJP, 6 from Congress, 3 from PDP, 1 from CPI-M, 1 from the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), 1 from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), 1 from the Peoples Conference (PC), and 6 independents.
One Independent has joined the NC, while Congress is providing external support to the NC government.
Currently, two seats are vacant, with by-elections for these two seats—Nagrota in Jammu and Budgam in the Valley—scheduled for November 11.
The Nagrota seat became vacant following the death of BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana on October 31, 2024. The BJP has nominated Rana’s daughter, Devyani Rana, for the Nagrota seat, while the NC has put forward Shamim Begum.
NC had invited Congress to contest from Nagrota but the party declined.
The Budgam seat became available after Omar Abdullah resigned from this position after winning two seats in the 2024 Assembly elections.
The NC has fielded Aga Syed Mehmood from Budgam, while the PDP has nominated Aga Muntazir Mehdi and the BJP has chosen Aga Syed Mohsin.
