Pathanamthitta, Oct 2 (IANS) The Sabarimala gold plate controversy intensified on Thursday with new disclosures from various sources and potent remarks from political figures, as inquiries increase regarding accountability and alleged misappropriation of temple gold.
Unnikrishnan Potti, recognized as the individual behind extensive fundraising disguised as Sabarimala-related ventures, stated to the press that he would comply if summoned by vigilance authorities.
Potti refuted any allegations of misconduct, claiming he has committed no wrongdoing and that any accusations would be contested in court.
However, findings from the Devaswom Vigilance suggest a different story.
Their report indicates that Potti allegedly gathered significant donations from devotees across several states, under the pretense of gold plating the Sabarimala idol and financing annadanam (community meals).
Reports suggest that officials may have aided him in these initiatives, which now raise questions about their transparency.
The Leader of Opposition, V. D. Satheesan, characterized the events at Sabarimala as "fraud and theft".
He accused both the previous and current Devaswom Boards and governments of shielding those implicated in the misappropriation.
Satheesan pointed out that the gold, initially under a 40-year warranty, was removed after 20 years without High Court consent and returned with a notable deficit, validated by the Board’s own investigation.
He called for accountability from the ministers and presidents who sanctioned the removal and criticized intermediaries like Potti for allegedly exploiting devotees' faith for financial gain.
In response, Devaswom Board President PS Prashant conceded procedural oversights by officials in presenting records to the High Court but maintained that the Board keeps thorough accounts of all gold stored in 18 lockers, including 467 kg that was monetized through the Reserve Bank.
He reiterated the Board's commitment to seek a comprehensive investigation under High Court supervision.
The controversy has led to increased demands from the Congress-led UDF for a CBI probe to ensure impartiality.
The High Court has already stressed the necessity for a confidential, in-depth inquiry into all matters concerning the sanctum sanctorum, including verification of strong room inventories and examination of the Thiruvabharanam register.
As the Sabarimala gold plate saga progresses, public scrutiny remains focused on the accountability of temple authorities, intermediaries, and political figures, highlighting the vital need for transparency in the management of sacred assets.
