Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 11 (NationPress) On Saturday, the Crime Branch of the Kerala Police officially initiated a case linked to the alleged gold plate scam at the Sabarimala temple.
Previously, the Kerala High Court established a dedicated investigation team comprising five police officials led by Crime Branch chief ADG H. Venkitesh.
The case has now been assigned to Venkitesh for further investigation.
The 10 individuals implicated include 'sponsor' Unnikrishnan Potti, along with his associates and members of the Devaswom Board.
The allegations encompass theft, forgery, breach of trust, and criminal conspiracy.
Initial investigations reveal significant procedural breaches during the transfer of the gold plates on July 19 and 20, 2019.
The Devaswom Vigilance report suggests collusion between officials and contractors.
The gold plates were reportedly transported from Kerala to Bengaluru and subsequently to Hyderabad in a span of ten days, circumventing established protocols.
While the initial Vigilance report indicated that 989 grams of gold was unaccounted for, further investigations suggest that the actual amount may be significantly greater.
Records maintained by the Thiruvabharanam Commissioner point to the potential swapping or diversion of the original plates.
The involvement of Smart Creations, the firm responsible for the plating work, is now under examination.
Although the company claims it does not melt gold, it acknowledged doing so on behalf of Potti, a regular client.
The SIT is poised to utilize scientific testing to ascertain whether the original gold plates were melted down or replaced.
This case, which involves one of Kerala's most esteemed temples, is likely to expand further with additional arrests and evidence-based actions in the days ahead.
Both the Congress-led UDF and the BJP have been calling for the resignation of Devasom Minister V.N. Vasavan and the members of the Devasom Board since the revelation of the scam.
The last four days of the assembly session were marked by turmoil as the Congress-led UDF opposition raised this issue.
