Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 5 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition, V. D. Satheesan, expressed on Wednesday that the most recent remarks of the Kerala High Court have validated the Opposition's persistent claim that the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) rushed to transport the Dwarapalaka (temple gatekeeper) sculptures for gold-plating at the renowned Sabarimala temple.
Satheesan stated, “The High Court has reaffirmed our position — that the TDB acted with unnecessary haste in moving the sculptures.”
He further noted, “The court also highlighted our assertion that Unnikrishnan Potti operated as the de facto authority at Sabarimala.”
Satheesan called for the immediate arrest of N. Vasu, the former Devaswom Commissioner, emphasizing that it was during his term that the gold-plated copper sheets were switched and inaccurately reported in official documents.
He remarked, “Potti, the primary accused in this case, had sent an email to Vasu on December 9, 2019, indicating that leftover gold sheets could be used for a poor woman’s wedding. Vasu has acknowledged receiving this email.”
Satheesan pointed out that Vasu had two terms as Devaswom Commissioner and was appointed TDB president shortly after the scandal came to light — a decision that, according to him, reflects Vasu's political influence within the CPI-M and state government.
He asserted, “It is well-known that if Vasu is detained, it could expose ministers and senior CPI-M leaders as well.”
He added that since the investigation extends to irregularities occurring between 2018 and 2025, the current Devaswom Board lacks the moral authority to remain in power.
Satheesan declared, “Instead of taking action against those accountable, the government and CPI-M are attempting to prolong the Board's term to shield them. The Opposition will not permit this.”
Earlier today, the Kerala High Court authorized the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to perform a scientific examination in connection with the alleged irregularities in gold-plating.
To date, three individuals have been arrested, while Vasu has been interrogated once and subsequently released.
The arrested individuals include Potti, TDB official Murari Babu, and Sudheesh Kumar, Vasu's former private secretary during his presidency at TDB.
Notably, Vasu, a close ally of the ruling party, previously served as the president of a CPI(M)-controlled village council and was part of veteran CPI(M) leader P. K. Gurudasan's staff during his tenure as Excise Minister in the V.S. Achuthanandan cabinet (2006–11).
