Kolkata, March 24 (NationPress) Intelligence agencies at both the central and state levels have been placed on a heightened state of alert in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, particularly in the villages near the international border. This alert follows intelligence reports regarding renewed efforts by the Bangladesh-based extremist groups Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HUT) attempting to breach the border.

According to sources, the alerts were triggered by information indicating that certain JMB and HUT members, currently based in the Rajsahi and Chapai-Nawabganj districts of Bangladesh, are making small group attempts to illegally enter Indian territory in the Murshidabad district to reactivate dormant sleeper cells.

These intelligence inputs were reportedly obtained after officials traced communications between the JMB and HUT operatives and local contacts in Murshidabad via various Internet-based channels.

Some of the local individuals contacted include those associated with unregistered madrasas operating in villages along the India-Bangladesh border within Murshidabad.

Additionally, intelligence agencies suspect that the Bangladesh-based operatives not only aim to reestablish sleeper cells but also seek to recruit new members, given their ongoing communications with madrasa instructors.

As a precaution, intelligence personnel have intensified their surveillance in border villages of Murshidabad, with similar measures also heightened in the neighboring Malda district.

Border Security Force (BSF) outposts in both districts have been notified of the situation.

Homeowners in these border areas have been instructed not to lease accommodations to unfamiliar individuals without verifying their identity. They are also urged to inform local police stations about any new tenants.

A few months prior, the Union home ministry mandated a review of security protocols for Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, following warnings from central agencies indicating that he could be a target of both JMB and HUT.

Until November of last year, Adhikari was granted “Z” category security solely within West Bengal. However, in light of the threat alert, this level of security is now extended to him during travels throughout India.
