What Security Measures Are in Place for the Ashes Test After the Bondi Beach Shooting?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Adelaide, Dec 16 (NationPress) In light of the recent shooting incidents at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, authorities have implemented enhanced security protocols for the upcoming third Test match of the Ashes series between Australia and England at Adelaide Oval, scheduled to commence on Wednesday.
South Australia’s Premier, Peter Malinauskas, confirmed that there will be extra measures, including the deployment of police officers armed with rifles, around the stadium.
“Considering the events that occurred in Sydney, we are instituting additional protocols at Adelaide Oval. This is merely a precautionary step, but it’s essential to maintain a heightened state of alert at this time,” Malinauskas stated as reported by the Daily Mail.
The tragic incidents, executed by two individuals during a Jewish celebration at Bondi Beach, resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals and left numerous others injured. The perpetrators were swiftly caught, with one dead and the other in critical condition.
In reaction to this tragedy, Grant Stevens, the South Australia Police Commissioner, announced that specially trained security-response officers, armed with rifles, will be stationed around the Adelaide Oval during the match.
“We are balancing the community's concern regarding rifle-carrying police with the need for effective response capabilities should an incident arise. These officers are specifically trained for such situations,” he remarked.
Despite the bolstered security, there is currently no evidence suggesting an escalated threat to the cricket match or any community events.
In a joint statement, Cricket Australia (CA) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) expressed their shock and condolences regarding the Bondi Beach attack.
“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, the Jewish community, and the people of Australia during this profoundly distressing time. We extend our sympathies to all affected,” the statement said.
As a sign of respect, a moment of silence will be observed prior to the match, and players from both teams are set to don black armbands in honor of the victims of this violence.
Australia currently leads the five-match series 2-0 and aims to secure the Ashes urn with a victory in this third Test.
