South Eastern Railway hits 100 million tonne freight milestone 9 days ahead of last year in FY27
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
South Eastern Railway (SER) surpassed the 100 million tonne freight loading mark on 20 September 2026 — nine days earlier than the corresponding milestone in the previous fiscal year — making it one of the fastest starts to a financial year for the zone. By 22 September 2026, cumulative loading had climbed further to 101.33 million tonnes, against 96.05 million tonnes at the same point in FY26, a year-on-year growth of 5.42 per cent.
Key Milestone and Zone Rankings
In FY26, SER loaded 210.10 million tonnes of freight, earning ₹18,324.4 crore, but fell short of its target of 218 million tonnes. It was ranked third among the 17 freight-carrying zones, behind East Coast Railway (286.26 million tonnes) and South East Central Railway (261.25 million tonnes). In the current financial year, its closest challenger for the third position is East Central Railway, which has loaded 203.42 million tonnes so far. The Railway Board is yet to set zone-level targets for FY27, but SER expects to retain its standing.
Commodities Driving Growth
Three key commodities have powered this year's outperformance. Coal loading is up 6.41 per cent on a cumulative basis, alumina has surged 15.98 per cent, and iron ore has grown 7.55 per cent. In the first quarter of FY27, coal traffic from Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd alone registered a 17.6 per cent jump, averaging 18 rakes per day. Finished steel loading posted the highest quarterly growth at 18.22 per cent, while petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL) loading earned ₹52 crore, recording the highest percentage revenue growth at 26.39 per cent over the corresponding period last year.
Divisional Performance
The Chakradharpur Division has been the standout contributor, loading 75.89 million tonnes against 70.97 million tonnes in the same period of FY26 — a growth of 6.94 per cent. Kharagpur Division added 12.48 million tonnes, up from 12.06 million tonnes, registering a growth of 3.44 per cent.
Revenue Performance in Q1 FY27
In the first three months of FY27, SER's originating freight revenue reached ₹4,539 crore, a 1.10 per cent rise over the same period last year. Coal traffic contributed ₹1,426 crore (up 1.2 per cent), finished steel generated ₹810 crore (up 13.19 per cent), and fertilisers contributed ₹25 crore (up 3.15 per cent). Overall originating freight volume in Q1 grew 1.51 per cent over the year-ago quarter, reaching 53.06 million tonnes.
Outlook for FY27
SER officials expressed confidence that the zone will outperform its FY26 loading figures by a significant margin, buoyed by the early milestone and sustained momentum across core commodities. This comes amid a broader push by Indian Railways to grow freight share and reduce dependence on passenger revenue. With six months of the financial year still to run, whether SER can close the gap on the 218 million tonne target it missed last year will be a key marker to watch.
