Cape Town, Nov 24 (NationPress) Tabraiz Shamsi, the experienced South African wrist spinner and recent acquisition of MI Cape Town, will not be participating in the forthcoming SA20 season due to personal reasons. His decision has paved the way for all-rounder Thomas Kaber, another left-arm wrist spinner, who has been brought in as his substitute.
Kaber is rejoining a familiar environment, having been part of the MI Cape Town team in each of the last two seasons. During MI Cape Town’s championship-winning campaign for the 2024–25 season, he played in only one match, while in the 2023–24 season, he made eight appearances. Throughout his SA20 career, Kaber has bowled in seven innings, taking 10 wickets at an impressive average of 16.60 with an economy rate of 8.05.
With the bat, although opportunities have been scarce, he has scored a total of 34 runs in four innings, remaining not out in three instances. His current form is promising, as he competes for the Warriors in the ongoing CSA T20 Challenge, where he has secured seven wickets in six matches, conceding a modest 6.31 runs per over with an average of 17.42.
The spin department of MI Cape Town for the league’s fourth edition remains robust despite Shamsi’s absence, with talents like Rashid Khan, George Linde, and Dane Piedt providing depth and variety. Their pace attack is equally impressive, featuring international stars Kagiso Rabada and Trent Boult, alongside Corbin Bosch and Dwaine Pretorius.
Shamsi, who was acquired in the September auction for R500,000 (approximately USD 29,000), was anticipated to make his debut season for the franchise. Previously, he played for Joburg Super Kings and Paarl Royals in earlier editions. Currently, he is participating for the Northern Warriors in the Abu Dhabi T10.
This year, he turned down a national contract with Cricket South Africa and was consequently not selected for the ODI series against India. His latest T20I appearance occurred during the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The reigning champions, MI Cape Town, are set to kick off their title defense on December 26 against Durban’s Super Giants at Newlands, which will also host the tournament final on January 25.
