Shivakumar Advocates for Unity in INDIA Bloc, Calls for Support in Tamil Nadu Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Erode (Tamil Nadu), April 15 (NationPress) Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar emphasized the critical need for unity among the Congress party, the DMK, and members of the INDIA bloc. He asserted that a united front is vital for ensuring effective governance and fostering national harmony.
While campaigning for Congress candidate Gopinath Palaniyappan in the Erode (East) Assembly constituency, Shivakumar criticized the BJP for its attempts to sow discord across southern India based on linguistic and religious differences.
He called on the electorate to reject such “divisive politics” and instead rally behind parties that prioritize inclusive growth.
Shivakumar highlighted the significant role of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in fortifying the opposition alliance, stating that the INDIA bloc has emerged as a formidable platform capable of delivering stable and people-focused governance.
He noted that the Congress-DMK coalition has proven its resilience over time and continues to earn public confidence. He pointed out that southern states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka contribute significantly to the national economy, yet the Union government has failed to adequately recognize their contributions.
According to Shivakumar, the DMK-led alliance aims to create a business-friendly atmosphere while also focusing on welfare initiatives for the general populace.
Referencing the legacy of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, he remarked that the “Dravidian model” has established a robust basis for social justice and advancement in the state.
Later, during a press briefing, Shivakumar expressed his belief that the DMK-led alliance would achieve a two-thirds majority in the forthcoming Assembly elections. He mentioned that the people of Tamil Nadu seem poised to support the ruling coalition, citing the government's welfare programs and governance achievements over the last five years.
He also announced that prominent Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Kharge, would be traveling to Tamil Nadu for campaigning following the special session of Parliament.
In response to critiques from AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Shivakumar indicated that such comments reveal the opposition's anxiety regarding the enduring Congress-DMK partnership. He advised the youth and women not to be misled by political rhetoric, asserting that only seasoned parties can guarantee sustained development.
Regarding the Mekedatu dam issue, he stated that it is currently under judicial consideration and will be dealt with according to legal standards. Additionally, he expressed skepticism about the Central government's timing in proposing an increase in Lok Sabha seats alongside the women’s reservation bill, suspecting it to be politically motivated.
