Lima, April 18 (NationPress) Paris Olympian Shriyanka Sadangi has etched her name into the records as the newest Indian shooter to qualify for an individual world cup final for the first time, competing in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions (3P) event at the ongoing International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun stage.
Shriyanka ultimately finished in eighth place, concluding her performance after the 10th shot of the Standing Position round, the 40th of the 45-shot final. Sagen Maddalena of the USA, who is the Paris silver medallist, clinched the gold medal.
This victory propelled the USA to the top of the medal standings with three golds and six total medals, while India held the second position at the end of the third day of competition, having earned two golds, a silver, and a bronze.
It was a tough day for Indian shooters overall, as none qualified for the men’s 3P final, and many faced a challenging first round in the men’s 25m rapid-fire pistol (RFP) event.
In the women’s 3P, the Indian contingent seemed to struggle after the initial two kneeling and prone positions. However, all three competitors - Shriyanka, Ashi Chouksey, and prior world cup gold medalist Sift Kaur Samra - surged forward impressively in the final standing position to aim for a qualifying score.
Shriyanka achieved a solid score of 588 to secure seventh place, while Ashi finished with better accuracy than Sift, taking ninth and 11th places, respectively, both with scores of 587, narrowly missing the qualifying mark.
In the final, Shriyanka started strong with a 10.5 on her opening shot. However, as the competition intensified, her performance began to wane. Her best opportunity arose when she climbed to sixth place with two shots left in the second prone position, but scores of 9.8 and 9.3 effectively diminished her chances of a higher placement.
She concluded her performance with a final shot of 9.9, totaling 400.7, and exited alongside seventh-placed Brazilian Geovana Meyer.
In the men’s 3P category, Aishwary Tomar, Niraj Kumar, and Chain Singh ended in 17th, 18th, and 19th places, respectively. The first two recorded identical scores of 587, missing the last qualifying mark by just a couple of points, while Chain scored 586.
Additionally, during the day’s events, Anish, Vijayveer Sidhu, and Gurpreet Singh finished outside the top six qualifying scores on day one of the men’s RFP. They will need to elevate their performances in the upcoming second rapid-fire round to contend for a medal.
