Bengaluru, March 25 (NationPress) Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declared on Wednesday that he indulges in non-vegetarian meals even during festive times such as Shivaratri and Ugadi, emphasizing that he does not adhere to traditional reservations regarding this practice.

"For me, every day is equal. It is my personal choice to consume non-vegetarian food on these occasions," the Chief Minister remarked.

Siddaramaiah's statement stirred controversy within the State Assembly after he faced criticism from R. Ashoka, the Leader of the Opposition and a prominent member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Ashoka had previously pointed out that the state Budget was presented at an 'auspicious' time based on Hindu traditional periods like 'Rahu Kaal' and 'Gulika Kaal'.

The Chief Minister is recognized for his rationalist and anti-superstition views, often challenging established religious customs without fully identifying as an atheist.

He has a history of defying norms, including visiting places deemed "jinxed," presenting budgets during Rahu Kaal, and advocating for anti-superstition legislation.

In response to Ashoka's remarks, Siddaramaiah stated, "It is accurate that the Budget was presented at a time considered auspicious by Hindu standards. We must heed advice from individuals like you (R. Ashoka). In the past, I have presented Budgets during Rahu Kaal, which is viewed as inauspicious. This time, my family and advisors suggested I present it slightly earlier."

"I value democracy," he added.

This prompted laughter from Ashoka and other members of the Opposition, who disagreed with Siddaramaiah's perspective.

Siddaramaiah continued, "Even now, I do not regard Rahu Kaal or Gulika Kaal as inauspicious."

"I have not based the Budget presentation on such beliefs. In previous instances, I have presented Budgets during both Rahu Kaal and Gulika Kaal, which are both seen as inauspicious. I do not endorse such beliefs," he stated.

Opposition leader Ashoka retorted, "The context was different then. Today's landscape has changed. You will need to present the next Budget as well, which is why you considered the auspicious timing. This is your first step in that direction."

Siddaramaiah countered that there was no such reasoning. "I have never checked if a time is auspicious or not. On a solar eclipse day, tell me, who would refrain from eating non-vegetarian food on Ugadi or Shivaratri? I do," he asserted, leading Congress members to applaud.

"There is nothing wrong with it. Every day holds the same significance. We merely celebrate certain days as festivals," Siddaramaiah remarked.

R. Ashoka further questioned the devotion of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

Siddaramaiah replied, "Faith is a personal matter. You (R. Ashoka) are wearing a shawl today. Why this attire?"
