Thiruvananthapuram, May 27 (NationPress) The bypoll on June 19 for the Nilambur Assembly constituency in Kerala is poised to pave a significant path for the historical political adversaries -- the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
The Congress has already named its candidate, while the CPI(M) and the BJP have yet to announce their nominees for the contest.
The Congress took the lead in announcing its candidate -- Aryadan Shoukath, the son of seasoned Congress leader Aryadan Mohammed, who represented this constituency successfully for eight terms and faced defeat three times between 1967 and 2016, after which he stepped back from active politics.
In the 2016 elections, Shoukath was a candidate but lost to P.V. Anvar, the then Left Independent candidate, although he managed to reclaim the seat in 2021.
Anvar, once a staunch supporter of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, had a fallout with him. Earlier this year, Anvar resigned and expressed his allegiance to the Congress-led UDF.
Despite Anvar's intentions to join the UDF, his plans have yet to materialize, and the Congress party has decided to delay this integration, currently posing a challenge for Shoukath.
A political commentator, who spoke on condition of anonymity, conveyed to IANS that this election now holds greater significance for CM Vijayan than for either the Congress or Anvar.
“The Left has crafted a narrative that CM Vijayan is set to secure a third consecutive term in 2026. Hence, it is now incumbent upon CM Vijayan to ensure they hold this seat; otherwise, doubts about this narrative will arise,” the analyst stated.
The CPI(M)-led Left still remains undecided about whether to field their own candidate or support an Independent aligned with the Left.
Meanwhile, the BJP, which garnered merely around 8,000 votes in the 2021 Assembly elections, is also uncertain if they or their ally should contest, as they are well aware of the uphill battle they face.
On Tuesday morning, Shoukath, accompanied by his supporters led by V.S. Joy, the Congress chief of Malappuram district, visited the grave of Aryadan Mohammed.
With tears streaming down his face, Shoukath expressed that although his father is no longer with him, his blessings will always accompany him.
Joy, who also aspired for the seat, remarked, "Aryadan Mohammed Sir deeply wished for the Congress to win this seat in 2016 and 2021, but he passed away with a heavy heart in 2022. This time, even though he is absent, we are determined to win."
For CM Vijayan, this victory is crucial to maintain his stronghold on the party. For the Congress-led Front, holding this seat is vital to enhance its prospects ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
